The Mythical World of Middle-earth – online conference

The Department of English and American Studies at Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra invites you to submit presentation proposals for an online Tolkien conference.

The topic of this conference is The Mythical World of Middle-earth.

This will take place on 27 March 2026 (Friday) on ZOOM.

We invite you to submit proposals for 20 minute talks/presentations exploring various aspects of the topic in Tolkien’s works and films, which may include but are not limited to the following ideas:

– the evolution of Middle-earth’s mythology within the context of the universe as well as throughout the process of Tolkien’s writing
– parallels between Middle-earth’s mythology and real world mythologies: Greek, Roman, Northern, Christian…. but also from other parts of the world (Asian, Native American, African…) where there are no proven links to Tolkien’s world-building, to show that they all stem from a common proto-mythology
– how mythology in our world and in Middle-earth provides moral and ethical teaching
– humans (and other humanoids) as mythical and myth-needing creatures
– analysis of (semi)divine creatures from Middle-earth
– religion and other aspects of spirituality as products of our mythical essence
– analysis of mythical and folklore archetypes in Middle-earth
– Faery land as mythical land
– mythical enchantment and magic
– how the great stories (and myths) never end.

The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2025.
Submit here.
