The Department of English and American Studies was founded in 1990. At the time, Slovak society was strongly aware of a lack of foreign language skills. The priority of the Department was to prepare a generation of knowledgeable and skilled teachers of English language and literature. In particular, extensive research was performed internationally in the area of contrastive linguistics, comparative studies of literature, communication theory, translation theory and communicative teaching.

The Department of English and American Studies currently offers attractive study programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels in both teacher education and single-subject study programmes. Teaching and research activities are provided by a dynamic, creative team that has rich educational experience and actively cooperates with domestic and foreign institutions.
