The Department of English and American Studies was founded in 1990. At the time, Slovak society was strongly aware of a lack of foreign language skills. The priority of the Department was to prepare a generation of knowledgeable and skilled teachers of English language and literature. Despite the complexity of the requirements in this era, the Department also constantly tried to maintain standards of academic research. Its research activities had developed within the purview of the Department of English and German Studies at the Faculty of Education in Nitra during 1969-1979. In particular, extensive research was performed internationally in the area of contrastive linguistics, comparative studies of literature, communication theory, translation theory and communicative teaching.
The Department of English and American Studies offers attractive study programmes in both teacher education and single-subject study programmes. Teaching and research activities are provided by a dynamic, creative team that has rich educational experience and actively cooperates with domestic and foreign institutions.
